Awards Ceremony

The earlier awards ceremony was a welcome big hit. We started at 1:30pm sharp! We had folks fill out a slip of paper on their way in for a door prize, a way to encourage awards ceremony attendance!

At the start of the ceremony, Scattegories, SCRABBLE Slam, Tribond, SCRABBLE Tilelock, and Super SCRABBLE games were handed out to names pulled out of the box. One lucky person, Mark Milan (Laguna Niguel, CA), won the Franklin!

One lifetime achievement award (5000 tournament games played) was presented to Michael Baker (Portland, OR). He got a nice plaque and posed by the top board with Chris Cree (Dallas, TX).

Don Stock presented the "Rose Award" (named for Rose Kreiswirth) to 84-year-old Conchita Deprospo (Unknown city, FL). She posed by the big board and was delighted with her trophy.

We went through the divisions very swiftly this year. We started with Jason Idalski and the Collins division. Then we did the others in order: 4, Art Moore; 3, Dan Stock; 2, Bryan Pepper; and 1, John Robertson.

Anyone who won a prize posed by the big board with Chris Cree (Dallas, TX). And anyone who earned money got to stop by and fill out tax paperwork with John Chew who was wearing a SCRABBLE tie and sitting with the NASPA checkbook.

Perhaps one of the most touching moments came when Andy Hoang (Cary, NC) asked to speak to us all after he won his first place prize in division 3. He thanked all the people in the room by name for their support since he came into School SCRABBLE all those years ago (4 or 5). He paid particular attention to Katya Lezin (Charlotte, NC) and her kids. It was a beautifully composed thank you. The future of the game looks bright!

Check out all the prizewinners and their prizes in the "prizes" section of the web site!

Thanks to Chris Cree, Dallas Johnson, Sue Grogin-Johnson, John Chew, and every single other person on the committee this year! We had a great time!

Hope you all make your way to Buffalo next year!
