Round 2

Ted Rosen (Rochester, NY) is an early finisher. He gives me a handshake that almost sends me to the hospital! Born in Buffalo, he is greeting everyone and telling the bits about his hometown. My bit had to do with a past teacher of his who did watercolors of Buffalo and that Ted now watercolors some, too. More bits to come!

I watch Adam Logan (Ottawa ON) play BUNTINgS for 72 in his game with Puneet Sharma (Cambridge, MA).

Jason Broersma (Caledon ON) vs. Dave Wiegand (Portland, OR): this is a smoking hot game! I see Jasons’s IRIDeAL for 72 and AGATISED for 90. Dave has TEACLES for 92 and late in the game gets down PEBRINE# for 80. Jason held for a long time, because he didn’t know what to do. Dave had three tiles, two of which were PX. In the end, Jason pulled out a four-point win by “playing a good enough end game.” It was a game against Dave, after all, he had to give it his all!

Henry De Young (St. Marys ON) vs. Michal Josko (Rochester, NY). I see the pretty RESIdUUM, ADIPOSE, and ZERDA#.

Bryan Pepper comes up because he thinks he sees a fab triple triple. The game is Yvonne Lobo (Mississauga ON) vs. Roland Filio (Thousand Oaks, CA). I see BRAVOING on the triple and I am not sure if it is an extension of BRAVO or not. Yvonne plead SNORTER, ZaNDERS for 102 to open, and SIENITE for 66 as I watch. He got down FLAKIEST to the T, played in front of me, too. She is up as I walk away, but discover soon thereafter that it was his win, 458-443. Great game!

Eric Kinderman (Burlington, VT) and David Koenig (Falls Church, VA) visit the challenge machine. NOSINGS is ruled acceptable.

Matthew O'Connor (DeWitt, NY) is 1-1 now, having just defeated Ted Rosen (Rochester, NY). Matthew got down gRANDERfor 69 and RELEARNT through the A for 62. Ted played UNIPODS for 71.

Ben Withers (Houston, TX) vs. John OLaughlin (San Francisco, CA): NAEVOID, NISbERRY#, and RIDGILS on in-progress board.

From the far away department, Carmel Dodd (Australia) vs. Nicky Huitson (United Kingdom). I see RAOULIA#, DEFEATER, TOLaNES. TODGERS#, and BANTERED.

Chris Lipe (Rome, NY) is 2-0, having just defeated Shan Abbasi (Mississauga ON) with a 667 score. Ouch.

Katya Lezin (Charlotte, NC) is playing one division up from her daughter due to a spiked rating earlier this year. Despite feeling like the supreme underdog, she is 2-0. Hr best play so far is ENAMORED through the N for a 176-point triple-triple.

Jesse Matthews (Kelowna BC) had a big win, 563-311, this round vs Warodom Geamsakul (Japan). Jesse’s first Collins event!

A lovely 419-419 for Jason Keller (Highland Park, NJ) and Jim Pate (Birmingham, AL) this round.

Mark Kenas (Madison, WI) all smiles and sparkly blue eyes tells me that the tile gods have been very good to him so far and he wished they would save all the help for the later round games. Mark’s fans will be happy to know that even in Buffalo he is sporting his overalls!

Susan Lichtblau (Buffalo, NY) tells me this is her first nationals since Chicago, 16 years ago. Chicago was my first NSC, too, so we reminisce. Her granddaughter was 4 then and they just celebrated her 20th birthday!

Kate writes:

With three plays on the board, there is already a nine between Rafi Stern (Seattle, WA) and Zev Kaufman (Toronto ON). FUGAL played to the left of the star, PAVES making PA and AL, then LITTOR(AL)S through the AL.

The pretty AYURVEdA on a board at Walker Willingham (Bainbridge Island, WA) vs Geoffrey Newman (Brampton ON)

Gerianne Abriano (Staten Island, NY) vs Kevin Turner (Mississauga ON) - I see EMOLIENTS* on the board. There are two real nines in there - LIMESTONE and MILESTONE (plus LEMONIEST# in CSW). There is no real seven in TWL with EMOLIENT*, but it is MOLINET# in Collins!

Helena Gauthier (Merrimack, NH) vs Ruth Brower (New Castle County, DE) - the natural BANJOED is on the board. Just to its left, I see TOLARjEV - perhaps they were inspired to make a second J by the proximity of the first one.

Brian Galebach (Columbia, MD) gets four in a row against Paul Epstein (Ann Arbor, MI): PETALISE for 78, DEF(ER)RALS for 102, SToRMING for 82 and AMITOSIS for 61.
