Round 3

Nice to see familiar traveling faces here. Orlet Bullock (Barbados) is playing John O'Laughlin (San Francisco, CA) this round. Their game is a barn burner. I see John’s two double-doubles: ENRIVEN# and NOWTIER#. Later on, he got down GALIOTS and he also got down ALIENERS. Orlet played FINNIEST, EXCRETED, HErALDED, and the outbingo of DISMAYL#. I can see that Orlet is slightly ahead in their endgame and then hear it was a 458-400 win for him. Another fun word on their board: YUZU#!

The twins have decided to make it easier for those of us in the world who can’t tell them apart by their birthmarks. Charles Reinke (Middleton, WI) is clean-shaven (he points out, two Cs, easy to remember) and Thomas Reinke (Middleton, WI) is sporting a goatee. While Thomas battled at board 1 this round (check out his annotated division 1 game, he lost, but loved playing there), Charles took on Rafi Stern (Seattle, WA). I see TAGBOArD, QUAIGH (later extended to QUAIGHS in an outplay), LOGICISED, BROASTED, FLANERIE, VOLKS#, and LIONISER on their board. In the endgame, Charles put down dEPONENT through the second E for 72. His win, 479-431.

As he makes his way over to the center of the room, Avery Mojica (Overland Park, KS) stops me. He is slated to play Kate Fukawa-Connelly (Lawrenceville, NJ) at the annotated table 1 next round. He reminds me that he is only 17 and kind of scared. I assure him that they are nice up there, Kate is wonderful, and win or lose, he will learn something!

Richard Popper (Wilmington, DE) tells me that he was thinking about his club codirector this round. HE played NANCIEST and won the game!

Kit Morehead (Berkley, MI) played Linda Oliva (Lisbon, MD) this round and it was a close win for Kit, 411-396. At one point, Linda was more than 200 points behind and she managed to claw her way back, but ran out of game time to catch up fully. I see Linda’s BuRSTED for 75 and PRALINES for 61 and Kit’s SWEARINg for 83 and UNCOATED for 63.

I see a fun board toward the end game. Lindsey Dimmick (Baton Rouge, LA) is sitting with the pretty, but unplayable FREESIA on her rack. I see her UPROOTS and ENDOrSEs on the board. Her opponent, Troy Millington (Calgary AB) played FOUCETTE* and SMOGGED. In the end it was Lindsay’s win.

Ben Greenwood (Florence, MA) vs. Rhonda Roederer (New Orleans, LA). TRAINEE, FORESTeR, and THUMPING are on their just completed board. It was a close game and Ben opts to do a recount. The scores held and she won, 345-343.
