Back to NASC 2015 Live Coverage NASC 2015 Commentary: Round 17[ ] Go to: Before the Tournament, Round 1, Round 2, Round 3, Round 4, Round 5, Round 6, Round 7, Round 8, Round 9, Round 10, Round 11, Round 12, Round 13, Round 14, Round 15, Round 16, Round 17, Round 18, Round 19, Round 20, Round 21, Round 22, Round 23, Round 24, Round 25, Round 26, Round 27, Round 28, Round 29, Round 30, Round 31. Round 17 Art Moore waves me over to see a “hail Mary” bingo. Chan Fonseka (Dublin, CA) was behind in his game with Richard Banker (Ankeny, IA). He’d gotten down MARINATE early on, but Richard had played JAILErS for 102 and SMEARING to the G for 83. Holding AEUCDNS and in a little bit of time trouble, he tossed down UNCASED, hooking to make ADZE and ED for 83 points. He got FLD off Richard’s rack and won, 441-429. Chan was totally stunned and Richard couldn’t stop complimenting him on the find and the placement. Jason Broersma (Caledon ON) vs. Judy Romann (Bainbridge Island, WA): ACUITIES, NOUNIeR#, and ANOeSTRI# from the A are on their board. While I’m in hover mode, she puts down SORTIES for 69. Their result/challenge slip has NOUNIER and ANOESTRI on them. Perhaps they were looking them up midgame as I did? Robert Linn (Potomac, MD) vs. Bradley Whitmarsh (Attleboro, MA): XYLOID, RATTLIEr, cHASTENS, NUTSIER, ANGERING, ZUPAN#, and AMATIVE are on their board. A 563-450 win for Bob. Stefan Rau (Hudson, NY) vs. Becky Dyer (Austin, TX): GASTERS, asTONED#, RENVOIs, CARRION, COEMPT, and PODZOL are on their in-progress board. On Saturday night, John Robertson, the division 1 leader, hosted a trivia contest. It lasted two hours and drew a terrific crowd of 77 players divided into 12 teams. Cash prizes totaling $345 were distributed to the top four teams. The final question that decided matters was this: “Six films with apostrophes in their titles have won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Name three of them.” The six files are You Can’t Take It With You (1938), Gentleman’s Agreement (1947), All the King’s Men (1949), One Flew Over the Cockoo’s Nest (1975), Schindler’s List (1993), and The King’s Speech (2010). Ross Brown (Ottawa ON) ably served as scorekeeper. There was enormous positive feedback. We might reach 100 trivia players in Fort Wayne in 2016! Robin Pollock Daniel writes: I start in CSW country this round. Moseying past Peter Armstrong (Oakland, CA) and Jean McArthur (Austin, TX), I spot the Collins-only MINDINGS#, DEFEATER, AUDITING, and HEARING. As I move on, Peter is just placing the multi-overlapping fREEMEN down for 98. Some lovely words played by Steve Polatnick (Miami, FL) and John O'Laughlin (San Francisco, CA), as might be expected of such illustrious and well-studied players. TOWAGES for 77 is hooked by DISPARt along row 1, making STOWAGES and hitting the P on the double letter. Well done. I also note GLUTAEI# for 62, and the non-bingo SLEAZY for a hefty 71. Just a crazy, heart-racing game for Jim Burlant (Grapevine, TX) and Ian Weinstein (Coral Springs, FL). Jim’s first play is TRIPLET for 77, and Ian plays the beautiful eYEWATER to the R for 71, a tear-inducing play. Jim immediately draws and puts down SOLIDER for 74, to which Ian responds with RETAILOR for 66. Four back-to-back bingoes to start the game, 151-137 in Jim’s favour. Jim straight away gets to play QI for 65, followed by OUTDREAM for 76. Through the U in OUTDREAM, Ian slaps down JUCO to the triple for 63 points! What a game. Ian is rewarded immediately with a blank and DIApHONE for 83, but Jim gets ZINGED (the word, not the verb) for 79! With some Ss and Ts still unseen, and OUTDREAM dangling dangerously at M14, Jim decides to block by playing HUB parallel at N13. Uh oh; Ian slots AVISO right down from O11 for 58! But there are lots of Es left, and Ian post-mortems that maybe he should have played VISE for a few less points. Despite a lovely tile pool for the endgame and the possibility of bingoing in two different parts of the board, Ian’s three Es preclude him from getting anything going and he loses a heartbreaker, 530-479. Some lovely words played by Trey Wright (Sierra Madre, CA) and Orry Swift (Houston, TX). CAGOULEs, the newly-added PIEZO, jONESES (how many out there would have thought to make the blank a J?), and CHIRRE.
