Round 6

Richard Popper (Wilmington, DE) comes up to tell me about his 648 win this round with Joel Elkins (West Hollywood, CA). I see Richard’s pretty triple-triple TRINDLeS through the L, MONADES, ANURETIC, and ANGLERS. Joel played UNSTABLE and Richard used the U to play QUAKED on the triple for 69.

Joey Krafchick (Richardson, TX) vs. Trey Wright (Sierra Madre, CA). They are about midway through and I see Joey’s FERITIEs for 83 and ECCLESIA through the second C for 67. He also played the pretty nonnbingo BEEHIVE to the final E. Trey had ADAPTOR for 76 and SEASHORE for 64. I walk by later and see AUNTLiER on the board. It ended up being a 428-426 squeaker win for Trey.

A pretty board for Orry Swift (Houston, TX) and Jesse Day (Berkeley, CA). In reply to Jesse’s opening play, Orry played TOPAZiNE through the A for a cool 122 points. Other Orry awesomeness: OSTEOMAS for 72, SANGUINE for 59, and VIRGATES for 63. I think ERADIATE for 67 and ANGLERS for 68 were by Jesse. Orry says, “Don’t forget to mention that I tried TOPAZINES* and Jesse challenged it off!” I smirked because Jesse is doing his phd in geology, but Jesse pointed out that he is a “climate guy.” The truth is, TOPAZINE is an adjective, so no S! A 519-343 for the Texas phenom known as Orry.

Matthew Tunnicliffe (Ottawa ON) vs. Jason Keller (Highland Park, NJ). HARIJAn was Jason’s opening bingo. Other fun plays: IODINATE, EMIRATES, and SMIDGEN. I watch Matthew bingo out with LORDINg, but it wasn’t enough and he lost, 422-445.

Sal Piro (New York, NY) is floating on a cloud. He is 5-1 and just defeated Conrad Bassett-Bouchard (Piedmont, CA), our reigning division 1 champ. He said, “I lost a close one to Orry.” As if to explain how he could be beating all these great players he leaned in, squeezed my arm, winked, and said, “I’ve been studying, a lot!”

Dave Wiegand (Portland, OR) and Leslie Charles (Trinidad and Tobago) are sitting over their just completed game. As always, I have no idea who won. I caught Dave’s eye and he said he’d won, but that he’d been behind through and Leslie made him work for it. I see Dave’s GLOWERED (blank L) and TRuNNEL. Other bingos: MINUTEST and DENARII.

Zachary Ansell (Los Angeles, CA) continues his winning ways in division 3. He was 5-0 going into this game. He defeated Sander Post (Ottawa ON) and is now 6-0. Way to go, Zach!

Doug Brockmeier (San Francisco, CA) vs. Jim Burlant (Grapevine, TX). Five turns into their game, there were four bingos. A bingo-bango-bongo for Jim: SIERRAN, AgOUTIES, and ROBOTISE, with the insert of INTuITED by Doug. Despite this, Doug was down by 102 points. Then he roared back with PILOSELY* (yes, he played a phony!) for 67 and OVENWARE to the last E for 84. Jim then got down REITBOK though the B and managed to stay in the lead. It came down to Jim having nice pointers at the end and Doug having just one-pointers. A 435-430 win for Jim.

Terry Kang Rau (Hudson, NY) was up by 150 late in her game with Thomas Reinke (Middleton, WI). She played BUFF for 42 (which she defends was the right play since it scored so much), but hung the F into the triple lane. You just know what happened, that twin slapped down SNAFUING for “150 or something.” He then picked up the other blank and bingoed out with TELERAN (blank L). Her other bingos were DETINUES and bULLIER. Terry ended up losing this heartbreaker to “that lock box,” 496-408.
