Round 4

Art Moore, division leader of division 4, points out he has two first time table 1 players who are delighted to be there. Pretty early into the game they walk up to the challenge machine and look up UNSEALER*, off it comes. I check out the words on their in-progress game: INGOTES*, RETAILeD, sNOOZED and the fun DIXITs. Hannah Rozear (Durham, NC) continued her winning ways with a 412-312 win against Deborah Komatsu (Los Angeles, CA). Hannah is now 4-0!

I see Eric Kinderman (Burlington, VT) and Michael Gincel (Lakewood, NJ) go to the challenge machine. NUNCE* is challenged off!

Shortly afterwards, Paul Richards (Australia) and Supriya Devnani (Orlando, FL) challenge VARIAS and it is ruled acceptable. I walk back to their board with them and see that she played SLIDERS, hooking to make VARIAS. In Collins, she earns 5 points for his bad challenge (but he doesn’t lose his turn), so she got 88 + 5 for that play.

Matthew Tunnicliffe (Ottawa ON) is having a good game against Jeff Fiszbein (South Lyon, MI) this round. I see Jeff’s CITRInE for 74 and DERATING for 70. Matthew played ISOLATER for 66, nITERIE for 77, and READIES for 75. Matt’s win, 490-395. Matt is 3-1 going into lunch.

Their board looks pretty, but it was a slow start. Conrad Bassett-Bouchard (Piedmont, CA) and Greg Heidler (Waialua, HI) traded on their first racks. I see RIVIERE and DOWAGERS, but no bingos until Greg slapped down REsTOKED. I see NIMROD, OTTAVA, LUDOS, and UNCO. Later on, Greg played BLITHERS through the I for 77. It was the endgame and it was hard to tell what was up, so I walked away. When I came back, Greg had just launched into a recount. I see that Conrad bingoed out with ACETONEs from the A. The score held up, a 372-367 win for Conrad. After the recount, Greg did a jumpshot of his crumpled up scoresheet toward the garbage can about 20 yards away. It hit the wall and bounced in, just like he planned it. Conrad gave him a much deserved applause.

Leesa Berahovich (Berkeley, CA) and Nigel Peltier (Portland, OR) are in an interesting game. I see her HERETRIX for 88 early on and the pretty non bingo JABIRUS. Later on OURANGS, sTHENIAS, and CERIsES went down. A close win for Nigel, 411-402.

An interesting battle this round for Jason Keller (Highland Park, NJ) and Asif Ali (Norman, OK). I see MARINATED and ENTITLEs on their board and then watch them walk to the challenge machine. Jason’s TOERAGS which hooked above OE to make TOE was ruled acceptable. Later in the game, Asif won a challenge of his own when Jason questioned STAYER. In the end, it was Jason’s win, 504-399. He had a good game last round and defeated former World SCRABBLE Champion, Panupol Sujjayakorn (Thailand).

So, the board arrests me and I linger and watch a lot: Laurie Cohen (Tempe, AZ) vs. Matt Canik (Austin, TX). He played JIBBA and then holding two blanks, plays dUG/dJIBBA for 38 points. She had just picked THREE Ds and was planning to play there next, so he saved her from a 50-point play. Other fun words on their board: GLOTTIS, OPENERS, COUTEAU, and the fun non bingo REDENIED from REDE. In the end it was her win. Later on Matt commented on how fun she is to play: fierce but polite and kind. A great mix!

Charles Reinke (Middleton, WI) had his crack at Panupol Sujjayakorn (Thailand) this round. I see Panupol’s UPROOTS, REIfYING, and ATTIRED. Charles played EXUVIA (nonbingo, but it earned 69 points), oRGASMIC, and CUNEATED. A one-point win for Panupol, 474-473.

Board 3 in division 4 had OOGAMETE played! Art is delighted!

David Whitley (Monrovia, CA) vs. Joey Krafchick (Richardson, TX). A great 7-tile overlap. INERTIAS was on the board and then DELEING was played beside it: ID, NE, EL, RE, TI, IN, and AG.

This “girl is on fire!” Carole Denton (New Carrollton, MD) has played five bingos in a row!!!! I run to division 2 to see them: UNPOISED for 64, OUTGREw for 67, SINUATE for 75, SAPPIER for 80, and LIONIZER for 86. By the time I get there, she has just played QUANGO for a bunch of points, too. Her win, 575-282.

Vera Bigall (Toronto ON) and Jonathan Lindh (Chicago, IL) have scampered off to the challenge machine and I check out their board: OvARIOLE, BACKLESS, and BANDAGED jump out at me. It was his win, 454-331.

Though their game is annotated for all to see, I stop by to visit Kate Fukawa-Connelly (Lawrenceville, NJ) and Avery Mojica (Overland Park, KS) to see how his first crack and table 1 went. It went well for him. He won! Kate tried a phony that he called off, but she was happy to play a new to our dictionary 4 CINQ. It cleaned up her rack beautifully.

Though he lost the game to Jeremy Hall (New York, NY), Richard Popper (Wilmington, DE) brings me over to see his 70-point nonbingo play: MONKEY down the triple through the E. It hooked to make OR, NO, KA, and YE and was the highest-scoring play of the game. Jeremy’s win, 416-370.

The only Brit who came this year: Austin Shin (United Kingdom). He squared off with Amit Chakrabarti (Hanover, NH) this round. I see his lovely CARLINE, ANNOTATES, and HERRING. Amit played PENTAGoN, CODEIAS, and REGLETS. Amit’s win, 536-448. Austin has a lovely accent!

Alan Stern (Shadow Hills, CA) tells me over lunch, “I only had one bingo in my first three games. Fortunately it was a good one: CURtAILER through disconnected I and second R. It was a 90-point double-double to boot.” Good job, Alan!
