Round 8

Torontoist.com just visited the ballroom. A reporter with recording cellular phone and a photographer, too. John went through the event details, standings, progress. If you get a chance to check them out, please do!

Jason Ubeika (Mississauga ON) is in good spirits having won all his games today. At 6-2, he is going to move to the top row for his next game, against Chris Williams (Vancouver BC). I wished him luck, every time I see Chris, he is winning today!

Jesse Matthews (Kelowna BC) had a nice win this round against Dean Saldanha (Richmond BC). I caught them in action and saw Dean's nonbingos: TERBIUM and oPAQUE to the triple. Jesse got down INDExER and FLAVOURS through the V. What I failed to note is just how many points he got for that gem: 176! It was a triple-triple! I think I was thrown off by the Canadian/British spelling and how appropriate it was. He thought he'd win the high play award for it, but Eric Tran already scooped that, we think, for his 203-point CITHERNS!

He came from behind and tried valiantly to win, even phoneying in his attempt to do so, but Andrew Golding (Montreal QC) lost to Vera Bigall (Toronto ON) this round. His MOUNTIes stayed on the board because Vera reasoned that he didn't get that many points and he would get about that many points no matter what she did, so she just took it. She got down ORDAINED, TIDINGS, and ORGASMS on the triple.

Nicholas Schneider (Pickering ON) brings me over to a game he lost. He wanted to show me Craig's first play, the nonbingo FUTHARK through the R. With that kind of crap, Craig found a rainbow. And he even defined it! (noun, the runic alphabet). Craig is a linguistic lover and it surprises me not that he knew the word! He also got down REFLOATS and RAINIER as back-to-back bingos and then SACRING. Nicholas played FEEDLOT. A 445-404 win for Craig.

Shan Abbasi (Mississauga ON) had an opening bingo this round against Heidi Robertson (Ottawa ON), DICTION. Sadly, he lost the game.

Three more games to go today, but I'm told that a coffee break is coming at 4. Just what the doctor ordered!
