Round 13 Auto-Commentary

Adam Logan (Ottawa ON) remains in the lead for the 3rd consecutive round, 11-2 +1071, on a 4-game winning streak. James Leong (Vancouver BC) is +1033, hovering at #2 for 3 rounds. Eric Tran (Calgary AB) is 2 games behind at 9-4 +1076, #3 improving from #5. Chris Williams (Vancouver BC) is +551, #4 sliding from #3. Dean Saldanha (Richmond BC) is +548, on a 4-game winning streak, #5 climbing from #8. Joshua Sokol (Montreal QC) is +429, #6 up from #10. Jesse Matthews (Kelowna BC) is 2.5 games behind the leader at 8.5-4.5 +594, #7 slipping from #4.

High Win: Shan Abbasi (Mississauga ON) 550-296 vs. Jason Li (Dollard-Des-Ormeaux QC). Low Win: Carl Madden (Brantford ON) 326-324 vs. Joseph Bowman (Mississauga ON). High Loss: Chris Williams (Vancouver BC) 426-490 vs. Adam Logan (Ottawa ON). Low Loss: Heather Mccall (Toronto ON) 241-437 vs. Zev Kaufman (Toronto ON).

Round 13

The Chew boys are with us today. During round 12, Jamie (one half of the Toronto School SCRABBLE Champions team) took on Gary Sagara. Even with Mad Palazzo trying to help Gary, he was unable to keep up with the champion!

During this round, Jamie is playing Liam (the younger one). Seeing the imbalance, the busy dad, is over there, helping Liam with a play or two. It looks like a Hasbro ad for SCRABBLE being "a good time game!"

Weather update: snow pellets are falling. Harder than snow, but not quite hail. I'm glad I'm inside and warm!

CityTV was here at the end of this round. John Chew says they are so nearby that they can run out of their building in the pouring rain and get here with hardly a sprinkle on their cameras! Allen Pengelly (Waterloo ON) was the player interviewed under the bright lights.

I walk by and see Crayne Spanier (Toronto ON) play LIGHTINg through the first I for 88. Losing on time, Steve Ozorio (Mississauga ON) played AUDITORS to the S on the triple line, hooking to make JO/OR for 91. Earlier, Crane got down SERVANtS from the first S for 83. It ended up Steve's win, 427-410.

Scoresheets were a bit hard to read, but I saw RESORCIN, ABSEiLS, and NIDATED on an Eli Shupak (Toronto ON) vs. Eric Peters (Toronto ON) board. Eric's win, 470-341.

Zev Kaufman (Toronto ON) and Heather Mccall (Toronto ON) are at the challenge machine. PELITES is ruled acceptable, and it was Zev's outplay to the S. While they were there, they looked up a play Zev had made earlier: QAMoTIK* for 79. He looked it up in his book and discovered that QAMUTIK is good (as is KAMOTIQ!). I also see Zev's MISDATE for 101. His win, 437-241.

Allen Pengelly (Waterloo ON) pointed at FOCALIZE on his board as I walked by. It was a 116-point double-double. He also got down OESTrONE and the fun nonbingo ENDURO (sounds like a superhero to me!). Siri played ANGERGIES and RELiEVO. Allen's win, 526-342.

The game is done and pretty much torn apart from endgame chatter, but James Leong (Vancouver BC) and Jesse Matthews (Kelowna BC) piece it back together as they chat about potential plays. I see Jesse's WEBINARS for 76 and CALDErA. James got down DUENNAS and CREOSOTE, but his best play may have been putting down XR in just such a way with the word EXTRA for 53 points. The rarely seen QIVIUT is also on the board. A 493-372 win for James.

Shan Abbasi (Mississauga ON) is extremely pleased with his last game against Jason Li (Dollard-Des-Ormeaux QC). Shan opened with HeTAIRA. Play two was GIFTINGS (which drew a challenge) and play three was GEYSERED (also challenged). Later on, Shan played NICKLE for 55 (challenged) and then he played PURITIES . Jason managed to get down INCaLLS. It was a 550-296 win for Shan. Both of them tell me that the challenges were out of desperation because Jason was just so far behind!

A few players have gathered around the just completed Jesse Matthews (Kelowna BC) vs. Matthew Tunnicliffe (Ottawa ON) game. One word in particular is of interest, Joshua's PREWRAPT*. There is a sort of surprise that it slipped by. Matt says, "Hey, PREWRAP and REWRAPT are good, why not PREWRAPT*? I had already decided if I got the second P that I was going to play it, but he got it first." I see SHORANS and OLEATEs. A 339-326 win for Joshua.

We just had a coffee break and now the hotel staff is setting up lunch. We are NOT starving here by any measurement!

In the side game conversation, Liam Chew just played a five-tile overlap with WHILE parallel to his last play's bingo of CASTERS. Take that big brother, Jamie!

Two birthdays today! Adam Logan (Ottawa ON) and Dave Krook (Mississauga ON)!
