Round 18

Since we had the two finalists already determined: James Leong (Vancouver BC) and Adam Logan (Ottawa ON), we had them play each other at table 1 while the others vied for the spots from 3-10. Check out the game in the annotated game section, but spoiler alert: Adam won. We are all looking forward to a great finals tomorrow!

Matthew Tunnicliffe (Ottawa ON) vs. Max Panitch (Toronto ON), game in progress: GRASSIER, ROUTEMAN, RANcIDER, NEATEsT, and TOXEMIA. Matt's win, 533-352. We all waited for the Eric Tran (Calgary AB) vs. Christopher Sykes (Cambridge ON) game to see who would come in third: Eric or Matthew.

COOLAgES* jumps of a Michael Fagen (Montreal QC) vs. Joshua Sokol (Montreal QC) board. Joshua got away with it. Also on the board: CANONISE, QUAGMIRE, PITIERS, and SUNTrAP (a new word in our dictionary). A 440-385 win for Joshua.

Jesse Matthews (Kelowna BC) vs. Jason Ubeika (Mississauga ON): JUNTO, KURT, and JORAM. Also ALUNiTIES, BORANES, ANTILEFT, and LACTONE. Jesse's win, 440-379.

I ran out of paper taking note son the Mark Edelson (Toronto ON) vs. Mike Ebanks (Calgary AB) game. Mark had a streak of fun: ELEMENTS for 90, BROCATEL, SUNDRIES, and UNITIEs from the U. Mike got away with SELFMADE* and Mark later pay EXpIATOR for 82. A 529-434 win for Mark.

Game in progress between Dean Saldanha (Richmond BC) and Ross Brown (Ottawa ON): EUPNOEA, ODONATES, OTALGIA, and PEROGIES.

Both smiling, Vera Bigall (Toronto ON) plays Bernard Gotlieb (Montreal QC). Game in progress: TENUrIAL, NoTICES, MoNSTERS, and ENROBES.

Zev Kaufman (Toronto ON) vs. [error: no such id: jasonlin]: AGAMETE, DIPTeRON, and FEARLESS.

Roger Cullman (Toronto ON) vs. Andrew Golding (Montreal QC): TAILLESS, FRiJOLES, SAVIOUR, UNREELED, and REIMAGED.

Sary Karanofsky (Cote Saint-Luc QC) ends the tournament with a win, 433-313, against Ryan Chepita (Ottawa ON): TRAIPsER, TRIODES, REVOTING, and EXTENDS.

At one point in the event, I heard Crayne Spanier (Toronto ON) say, in jest, that all he wanted to do at the CNSC was beat Heather Mccall (Toronto ON), his partner. Well, it looks like he had his chance! I see TAJINE, STROKInG, and ODONATE. After the game was over, he explained that he played UNDERSEA and she played CORALS, hooking to make UNDERSEAS! I'm sensing a snorkeling trip in their future.

The event staff has been removing table numbers and baskets holding papers all round. And, as each game wraps up, its owner disassembles the board and packs it up. Adam Logan (Ottawa ON) sees me looking at games and says, "Check out the nice play over there." I see Eli Shupak (Toronto ON) and Nicholas Schneider (Pickering ON) going at it. Glancing over the paperwork, I see that Nicholas has played TINWARE, VAUNTER, and DENTURES. At some point, REPELLANT went down, but in stages, as it wasn't a bingo. Pretty.

Well, we are very nearly done here. Players are hugging Adam Logan (Ottawa ON) and James Leong (Vancouver BC) and wishing them well tomorrow.

Everything from the event staff (John Chew, Mad Palazzo, Gary Sagara, Lisa Kessler, Risa Horowitz, Jackson Smylie, Vera Bigall, Sue Trembley, and Joshua Greenberg) to the hotel staff and venue has helped another CNSC go into the record books! See you next time around!
