Round 3

I get called over to the first few plays of a game with Shan Abbasi (Mississauga ON). He pulled SHOWBIz out of the bag—of all the luck!

Fern Lindzon (Toronto ON) and Matthew Tunnicliffe (Ottawa ON) are in their endgame. I spy a lot of bingos: three of them hers early on: CONGERS, BERRIED, and SABOTAGE. This put Matthew behind a lot and consequently, he got nervous and desperate (words he used!). So, he played VIRTU* on the triple, hooking to make SABOTAGER and later NONGLOW* (Matt said, “Hey, it was 30 points, I needed them!”). He pointed to his INaSMUCH and said it was a miracle bingo that saved his bottom. In the end, he phonied his way to a 460-399 win. Fern, not at all mad at him admitted she’d let the bad words stay on the board. I’m told that Matthew spends time studying “plausible phonies,” so this game is just the result of good studying!

Sam Hollington (St. Catharines ON) vs. James Leong (Vancouver BC): Sam played BATTLeR and FLEERING and James got down HURRIES, CORNEOUs, and VIRTUOSA.

FANGIRLS jumps of a Shan Abbasi (Mississauga ON) vs. Eric Tran (Calgary AB) board. I see his AENEOUS and JETPORT (nonbingo, but won him the game he contends) and Shan’s INTONES.

Joseph Bowman (Mississauga ON) finally has something to talk to me about. He leads me over to his board, his kilt billowing out as he walks. Crayne Spanier (Toronto ON), his opponent, opened with HAZIER and Joseph slapped down the 106-point double-double CaTCHERS through the R. In the endgame, Crane tried rESWORE*/DE and off it came. This was his first win of the night and Joseph is delighted. He promises to wear a kilt all event long. I suspected he was Scottish, but no, he’s a Norwegian in a kilt!

“Oh I had everything and poor Heather Mccall (Toronto ON),” said Marcela Kadanka (Toronto ON) after her 542-310 monster win. I spotted Marcela’s four bingos in a row to start the game: ARSENIC, UInTAITE, LOATHES, and BROIDeRS. Heather managed to play ANESTRI.

Joshua Sokol (Montreal QC) was able to draw a challenge with DITCHERS from Deen Hergott (Ottawa ON). Deen had played RETINAE and BARYoNIC, but it was Joshua’s GELATIs with one in the bag that earned him the win. EDIT: Okay, I am very sorry. I got this story very wrong. Deen had challenged the play DITCHERS at his Ottawa club recentlyish and learned then that it was good. Thus, he did NOT challenge it again in his game against Joshua. I think I heard he had challenged it am guilty of interpolating incorrectly. Thanks to the club mates who contacted Deen so we could correct the record!

Rita Horowitz, our third annotator, has arrived! She watches the annotated game 1 between Adam Logan (Ottawa ON) and Christopher Sykes (Cambridge ON). She looks serious and scribbles furiously on a notepad and slips me this paper: “Adam, behind, no place to put UNITARD. He played DUP and then pulled AU out of the bag.” This was followed by a frown-y face. As it turns out, the top seed lost his first game to an undoubtedly delighted Christopher! Check out the annotated wonder this round!

I watch a calm game unfolding between Ryan Chepita (Ottawa ON) and Chris Williams (Vancouver BC). I see NEARING, DIRNDLS, and RALLIERs. Ryan reaches out and circles the N and puts down TABORInE through the B on the bottom middle triple lane for 59 then draws the last tile in the bag: O. It wasn’t enough and Chris took the win.

I catch a game in progress between Tony Leah (Ajax ON) and Dean Porporo (Nepean ON) and Tony’s LOBELINe and CURNODAL (blank L) jump out. About 5 minutes later, two sweet girls come into the playing area, looking for “dad.” They were Dean’s kids!

Another Dean, this time Dean Saldanha (Richmond BC) was finishing up his game with Jason Ubeika (Mississauga ON). There are a few nice plays: NATATION by Dean and QUINTES by Jason. We giggle about how tired we all are (for instance, I wrote down Mike Ebanks (Calgary AB) as being Dean, his hat was covering his face, they could be dead ringers.....). As they discuss the game, I see ALiENOR, HELIUmS, and HAWKERS.

Time for bed, tout de suite!
