I confess to a tiny amount of initial trepidation about three unrated players playing in a high-stakes event, but these fine players are fitting right in. Bob Grant (Cape Spear NB) had played in the 1980s at the Toronto Scrabble Club, and has been waiting a long time for a Scrabble tournament to come to the Maritimes. Doug Murray (Sackville NB) is a regular at local charity Scrabble events, and is familiar with clock usage from chess tournaments. Mary Dale Haddad (Eel Ground NB), a walk-in registrant thanks to Noella Ward (Calgary AB) and Betty Bergeron (Calgary AB), won her first game by more than 100 points.

Each player received a Shediac tote bag, including a print of the Alvin Richard painting of the Shediac Crossword Game, a welcome letter from the town mayor, a book about the history of Shediac, and a Shediac pencil and pen.
