Thank you to lead organizer Pierre Cormier, his friend Mario Savoie, and the rest of the members of the Greater Shediac Chambre of Commerce for their generosity and vision in sponsoring the 2016 Shediac SCRABBLE Tournament.

We begin the event tonight with 15 players present from four different provinces and one state; they will play the first three rounds tonight of a 15+2 schedule, concluding Sunday with the best-of-two finals.

Their efforts will be sustained by coffee, tea, cupcakes and butter tarts from the local Sobey's supermarket that Mario manages. I'm a little full from all the lobster rolls today (Shediac is the lobster capital of the world), but will make the heroic effort necessary to eat a butter tart or two.

This tournament, fully sanctioned by the North American SCRABBLE Players Association (NASPA), takes place in the birthplace of the crossword game, where long before Alfred Butts invented our familiar SCRABBLE game, local polymath Edward R. Macdonald had the town playing a popular crossword game that survives now only in the text of the U.S. and Canadian patents that cover it. To commemorate this monumental event in human history, the town has raised a giant rack of crossword game tiles alongside the giant lobster that greets visitors to their town, and have invited the best players to enjoy their hospitality this weekend.

Jamie Chew (Toronto ON) was happy to be in second place with one game left to report; Dave Krook's (Mississauga ON) long-running win bumped him down to third place. I resisted the temptation to call an emergency halt to the event in the interim.
