NSSC 2014 Commentary: Round 1

We begin Round 1 ahead of schedule at 9:50, ten minutes ahead of schedule, after welcoming speeches by Karen Davis (Hasbro VP of Community Relations), Jack Van Leer (Senior Marketing Manager), and John Chew (Tournament Director). All the kids were in their seats and eager to get started.

New for this event are "bounty words": travel game prizes to the first teams to play words from a list of 20. This round, we had the following claimed: Wonderland BookSavers (MA) played BAG, Vista 6 (TX) played FUN and GAME, Foster Twins (MA) played GOOD, Alice Deal MS/Janney ES (DC) played RACK, Alice Deal MS 2 (DC) played ROAD, Vista 7 (TX) played TILE and Hampton Bays MS Lady Baymen (NY) played TIMER.

Mount Pleasant Christian School 4 (MD) have just played WORD.

Randolph MS B (NC) have the highest play so far: SHADIER for 93 points. Honorable mention to Cyclones (NC) with their 96-point phoney, REFRAGS. The first game results came in at 10:23.

Winning game spreads are capped at 100 points this round, so there is an 18-way tie for first place with six rounds to go.
